I don't understand buffing pad colors

I recently got a set of 3" buffing/polishing pads off Amazon and I need to get a better understanding about how to use them in general. If there's a tutorial out there that explains them I'd appreciate a link.

I don't have the chart in front of me right now, but I believe the instructions that came with them indicated the orange foam pad was for harder cutting, the blue and yellow foam pads would be for medium cutting/polishing, and the black and white foam pads are for fine polishing. Do all foam polishing pads follow this same color / grade code regardless of the manufacturer?

Not necessarily. What brand did you get from Amazon?

No brand printed on the packaging. A very cheap set.

    Short answer NO.

Here's what I know about pad colors...

Years ago pad colors meant something coarse, medium, fine, etc.
IIRC Lake Country had set colors for the different pad types.

Then along came Buff and Shine and they changed the pad type colors.
Now all the pad folks Scholls, Rupes, and Carpro have their own colors.

If you purchased an inexpensive set of pads the colors mean nothing.
You will probably need "the instructions that came with them".
You may be able to "feel" the pads to see which one is harder/softer.

That is why I would try them first on a scrap panel from a junk yard.
